BS5839-1:2017 All MCPs should be fitted with a cover
Last year the British Standard BS 5839-1:2017 fire detection and fire alarm systems for buildings was revised. This code of practice provides recommendations for the planning, design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in and around non-domestic premises and commercial buildings.
The revised standard includes 25 changes to 14 existing clauses, the most talked about of which is the recommendation for call point covers.
One of the most significant changes in this version is the requirement that manual call points should be fitted with a protective cover to reduce false alarms. Located in section 20.2 b) the revision specifically states that “All MCPs shouuld be fitted with a protective cover, which is moved to gain access to the frangible elements”.
Whilst the revised Standard does not specifically refer to existing call points, all call points should now be protected without the need to consult fire safety offices. Current Force can supply protective covers of all types, including a wide range of retro fit polycarbonate covers available for most industry standard call points.
